Portfolios are a deliberate collection of materials such as proof, reflections, and
feedback that show learning, experience, or professional development (Van der Gulden
et al., 2022). An academic portfolio is used to display the work that was completed over
the course of the academic years and that clearly demonstrates attributions and
acknowledgments. The development of a professional and academic portfolio can aid in
building a network for employment. A resume is useful for both educational and career
purposes, but it only provides a summary of your professional experience and skill set.
A more thorough collection of all the work you have completed during your academic
and professional life is an academic portfolio (Cope & Murray, 2018). With the help of
the portfolio, I can display the work that has already been completed as well as the
projects I’m working on now and those I have planned. As nurses, professional portfolio
is evidence of the skills, achievements, and professional experience (Burns, 2018). For
instance, by using the portfolio, I can highlight the needs I will address and showcase
the abilities I have developed. It is proof of the effort I am making.
Continued training and attendance at school is one academic strategy that will support
my developmental objectives. I can expand my knowledge base and improve my skill
sets by pursuing the highest level of education. Secondly, I can also apply for a position
at a company that will benefit from my skill set as a way to demonstrate my academic
and professional ambitions. It’s all connected, by using a portfolio, I can keep track of
everything I’ve accomplished while also studying, showcasing my strengths, and
demonstrating my abilities (Burns, 2018).
These objectives are in line with the university’s emphasis on social change because I
can contribute a higher caliber of patient care by getting involved in local organizations.
To encourage a positive experience for everyone, Walden University places a strong
emphasis on social change (Walden University, 2020). In the future, I hope to address
constructive social changes in the community I choose to work with thanks to the
education and knowledge I am acquiring now.

A professional or academic portfolio represents an opportunity to capture and preserve
a tangible history of work and accomplishments (Burns, 2018). Following intense
periods of learning and work, professionals are often burned-out and cannot reflect on
the growth experienced during the process. A portfolio allows a person to intentionally
maintain work, ideas, and research that may not be easily incorporated into a resume or
may not be easily explained to prospective employers, institutions of higher learning, or
colleagues (Casey & Egan, 2010). Additionally, a portfolio may contain ideas and
thoughts that become relevant much later on in practice.
My strategies for building my portfolio are pursuing additional education and
certifications and participating in nursing research. For example, as an adult learner
who has taken some time away from active nursing practice, my current educational
experiences and work represent the focus of my recent efforts. Thus, I will find classes
to build on my hands-on and diagnostic skills, such as a holistic and integrative health
certification, yoga training, behavioral training, and suturing classes. Additional
narratives will accompany these certifications and courses to add meaning and depth to
the training and how this training contributes to my practice (Casey & Egan, 2010).
Additional training will help build my confidence and adds something unique to my
portfolio.
As I eventually transition from formal education back to the workplace as an NP, I will
seek opportunities to engage in research. For example, I may dust off some burning
research questions from years ago that I didn’t have time to address because of…life.
The idea of committing to research terrifies me, so even more reason to push out of my
comfort zone. This will make me network with other professionals and stay current on
scholarly publications.
My goals align with Walden’s emphasis on positive social change within my community
and profession (Walden University, n.d.). I will continue to do this by providing current
balanced healthcare that includes physical and holistic care (mental, emotional, and
spiritual needs) for the health and healing of our country’s veterans. I will stay current on
my skills by maintaining current certifications and continuing with CEUs that are relevant
to my practice. I will remain connected and committed to nursing research to keep
current on evidence-based practices by investing in a journal subscription such as the
Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (JAANP).

The Role of the RN/APRN in Policy-Making
The purpose of this discussion post is to explain two opportunities for APRNs and RNs
to participate effectively in policymaking. APRNs and RNs can actively engage in the
policymaking process through their place of employment. They can guarantee that the
policies presented are effective following their place of work to function in an
environment that is conducive and meets their requirements (Schaeffer & Haebler,
2019). Professional organizations provide APRNs and RNs with yet another chance.
They can more effectively participate in policy formulation with the assistance of the
organization associated with their profession. This assists in creating regulations that
strongly support correct functioning in their specialty area (Sacristán & Dilla, 2015).
The opportunity presented by the workplace comes with certain obstacles, one of which
is that some RNs and APRNs are not up to speed on the procedure for formulating
policies, making it difficult for them to provide suggestions on the rules to be
implemented. This obstacle may be surmounted by providing them with training on the
procedure for formulating policies. The opportunity to be a part of a professional group
comes with the potential downside of going through a lengthy and laborious application
procedure. This long procedure causes them to give up, making it impossible to create
policies. This obstacle may be conquered by searching for a straightforward,
uncomplicated method that is quickly grasped by health practitioners.
Training is one of the many tactics I may use to advocate for the availability of these
possibilities. The strategy for teaching RNs and APRNs encourages them to clearly
understand their tasks and the environment in which they operate (Tummers & Bekkers,
2014). A seminar on the best practices for formulating policy is one example. Good
leadership is a method that helps RNs and APRNs to feel comfortable expressing their
opinions on the procedures that should be followed in the policies (Booher et al., 2021).
If the leadership is excellent, RNs and APRNs can choose the best course of action to
take when developing policies and will be allowed to express their opinions. A case in
point is one in which the leader is courteous, subservient, and supportive of their
followers.
In conclusion, as the largest segment of the global healthcare workforce, RNs and
APRNs are uniquely positioned to observe health policy’s effects on patients and
communities. RNs and APRNs can advocate for change within their employment and
organizations or directly with policymakers and elected officials since the policies have a
direct impact on the patient outcome and on how they conduct their work within their
specialty. Every nurse can participate in the formulation and implementation of health
policies as this is also an important aspect of their profession.
Lena,
With an emphasis on advocacy, what actions would you take to promote awareness
about the importance of getting involved in efforts related to policy making? What
resources would best assist others to get involved with policy change and
development?
