Written Essay:
Leadership is a critical aspect of success in any field or industry. It requires strong
communication skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to motivate and inspire others. The two
books, “Lead On! A Practical Approach to Leadership” by Rear Admiral Dave Oliver, Jr. and
“Leading with Honor: Leadership Lessons from the Hanoi Hilton” by Lee Ellis, offer unique
perspectives on leadership and the challenges that come with it. This paper aims to provide a
summary of the two books, analyze the issues raised, and discuss the lessons learned from them.
“Lead On! A Practical Approach to Leadership” by Rear Admiral Dave Oliver, Jr. is a
practical guide to leadership based on the author’s extensive experience as a leader in the US
Navy. The book is structured around the “Seven C’s of Leadership,” which are character,
competence, courage, commitment, communication, compassion, and community. Oliver argues
that these seven qualities are essential for effective leadership, and he provides examples and
anecdotes from his own experiences to illustrate how they can be applied in various contexts.
Throughout the book, Oliver emphasizes the importance of building trust and
relationships with team members, being transparent and honest in communication, and
demonstrating competence as a leader. He also stresses the importance of being adaptable and
open to feedback, and encourages leaders to seek out opportunities for growth and development.
Overall, “Lead On!” is a practical and accessible guide to leadership that offers valuable insights
and lessons learned from one of the US Navy’s most respected leaders.
The book is divided into three sections. The first section focuses on the principles of
leadership, including the importance of character, competence, and communication. The second
section covers the practical aspects of leadership, such as goal-setting, decision-making, and
delegation. The final section provides advice on how to lead through difficult situations, such as
crises and conflicts.
“Leading with Honor: Leadership Lessons from the Hanoi Hilton” by Lee Ellis is a
memoir and leadership guide based on the author’s experiences as a prisoner of war during the
Vietnam War. Ellis spent over five years as a prisoner in the infamous “Hanoi Hilton” prison,
where he and his fellow prisoners were subjected to torture and inhumane conditions. Despite
these challenges, Ellis and his fellow prisoners developed a strong sense of camaraderie and
resilience that enabled them to survive and ultimately return home.
The book is structured around the “Leadership Power Principles,” which are character,
courage, commitment, communication, competence, and caring. Ellis argues that these six
principles are essential for effective leadership, and he provides examples and anecdotes from his
experiences as a prisoner of war to illustrate how they can be applied in various contexts.
Throughout the book, Ellis emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive attitude,
building trust with team members, and effectively communicating in order to inspire and
motivate others. He also stresses the importance of being adaptable and innovative in the face of
challenges, and of maintaining a sense of purpose and mission in order to achieve success.
The book is divided into three sections. The first section covers Ellis’s experiences as a
prisoner of war, including the challenges he faced and the lessons he learned. The second section
identifies the eleven principles of leadership that Ellis developed during his captivity. The final
section provides practical advice on how to apply these principles in a business or organizational
context.
One of the key issues raised in “Lead On!” is the importance of effective communication.
Oliver argues that leaders must be able to communicate their vision and goals clearly to their
team, as well as listen to feedback and concerns from their team. For example, in one scene from
the book, Oliver describes how he gathered his team together to discuss a difficult problem they
were facing. He listened to everyone’s ideas and concerns and then helped the team come up with
a solution that addressed everyone’s needs. “From my point of view, this statement is absolutely
correct, and it corresponds to Oliver’s idea: ‘Speaking and listening are both important to
complete effective communication’ (Caroline Smith, 2015), as they affect every aspect of a team,
from a leader’s perspective to a member’s perspective. Any management skills or techniques
require effective delivery and reception of messages. The messages will determine the success or
failure of a matter, and mastering effective communication should be the first priority in guiding
our own team or being an awesome teammate.”
Another issue raised in “Lead On!” is the importance of building trust with your team.
Oliver emphasizes that leaders must be trustworthy themselves and also work to build trust with
their team members. In one scene from the book, Oliver describes how he had to earn the trust of
his team when he first took command of a ship. He did this by being transparent and honest with
his team and demonstrating his competence as a leader. In my opinion, being transparent in
terms of building trust is crucial. It determines whether a team can last for the long term or end
up collapsing. The statement “Trust is essential to an effective team because it provides a sense
of safety” (Mind Tools, 2022) further explains the vision that Oliver tried to express in the book.
This means that trust is a critical component of a successful team because it creates a feeling of
security among team members. When team members trust each other, they feel comfortable
sharing their thoughts, opinions, and ideas, knowing that they won’t be judged or criticized. This,
in turn, creates an environment where team members can communicate freely and openly
without fear of negative consequences or repercussions. When teammates are transparent
through trust, it exposes more information that can benefit their team in the long run, instead of
being scared to raise potential issues.
In “Leading with Honor,” Ellis emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive
attitude, even in difficult circumstances. He argues that leaders must be able to inspire and
motivate their team, even when faced with adversity. For example, in one scene from the book,
Ellis describes how he and his fellow prisoners of war developed a sense of purpose and
camaraderie, despite being held in brutal conditions. They focused on supporting each other and
maintaining a sense of hope, which helped them to survive and ultimately return home. In my
perspective, staying positive even in the worse situations is always the correct way mindset in
approaching any issues, because “People with positive attitudes remain hopeful and see the best
even in difficult situations(Swetha Amaresan, 2021).” The statement indicates that having a
positive attitude can make a significant difference in how we perceive and react to the world
around us. When we approach situations with a positive outlook, we tend to focus on the
opportunities, rather than the challenges, and we are more likely to find solutions rather than
dwelling on problems.
Another issue raised in “Leading with Honor” is the importance of trust and
communication within a team. Ellis argues that trust is essential for effective communication and
collaboration, and leaders must work to build trust with their team members. For example, in one
scene from the book, Ellis describes how he and his fellow prisoners of war developed a system
of communication through tapping on the walls of their cells. They had to trust each other to use
this system effectively and to avoid detection by their captors. This experience reinforced for
Ellis the importance of trust and communication within a team, even in the most challenging
circumstances. This issue indicated by Ellis has a similar point of view from Oliver. They all
have mentioned how important communication and trust are the essential keys to the success of a
team. Effective communication and trust can also enhance individual performance and
motivation within a team. When team members feel valued and supported by their colleagues
and leaders, they are more likely to be productive and committed to achieving shared goals.
In conclusion, effective leadership is essential for success in any field, and the books
“Lead On! A Practical Approach to Leadership” by Rear Admiral Dave Oliver, Jr. and “Leading
with Honor: Leadership Lessons from the Hanoi Hilton” by Lee Ellis offer unique perspectives
on leadership and the challenges it presents. Oliver’s book emphasizes the importance of trust,
effective communication, and demonstrating competence as a leader. Ellis’s book focuses on
maintaining a positive attitude, building trust, and effectively communicating to inspire and
motivate others, even in difficult circumstances. Both books provide valuable insights and
lessons that can be applied to any organizational or business context, highlighting the importance
of strong communication skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to motivate and inspire others.
Overall, the lessons learned from these books can help aspiring leaders develop the necessary
skills and qualities to become effective and successful leaders.
