My chosen path as a nurse
Healthcare professionals have roles that transcend patient care. They act as policymakers,
patient advocates, patient educators, and several other alike responsibilities. In my paper, I would
like to discuss how Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner can use their duties to enhance
health promotion, disease prevention, and patient advocacy. My chosen path as a nurse is
directed to become a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). Mental health is a
major health and social problem. Addressing the multifaceted factors that contribute to this
requires the professional input of healthcare providers (McCormack & Fléchais, 2017).
Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners through their professional responsibilities have an
opportunity to advance health promotion, disease prevention, and patient advocacy.
One of the most important hard skills a psychiatric mental health nurse need is
interpersonal communication. According to health studies Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse
Practitioners can promote health promotion, disease prevention, and patient advocacy as a result
of the professional commitments they must fulfill. I believe that being a nurse will provide me
the chance to make a positive impact in the lives of a great number of people as well as in the
communities in which they live. Spending time with patients of all ages and their families, as
well as interacting with specialists and other healthcare professionals, makes the time and effort
spent in the early phases of a field’s development valuable. Being able to understand how others
feel and their potential reactions is a skill that can help me develop positive relationships with
their clients and work towards achieving a positive outcome (Golomb et al., 2020). I can change
my behaviors in relation to others’ actions as well as persuade others to take a more proactive
approach to solve issues. This skill will integrate smoothly with the need to work with people of
varying ideologies and perceptions under mental care.
Soft skills such as reasoning and using logic to solve problems, speaking clearly and
listening actively, and time management also play a key role in the success of a mental health
nurse’s career (Bhugra et al., 2019). I often base my choices on a strong foundation of data and
reasoning to avoid fallacies that may lead to biased choices. That way, deciding on any treatment
plan will be evidence-based, and integrate the needs of the client and that of their family
members through open and two-way communications.
Psychiatrists have a major role to play in advancing health promotion, disease prevention,
and patient advocacy. Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) work with
patients, their families, and healthcare professionals in advancing the health of mentally ill
people. Collaboration, empathy, and active listening are the skills required to succeed in
delivering the responsibilities of a mental health nurse. Through my experience as a nurse, I also
learned that using evidence from scholarly sources is an additional approach to best enhance
patient care outcomes. Based on the ability to work with diverse mental health stakeholders,
communicate effectively with clients, and use logic and reasoning to understand underlying
issues, Psychiatrists can be part of the change needed to improve mental health nationwide.
