DescriptionMGMT 3035 – Operations Management
Project:
Industry Analysis Project
Due Dates:
See Calendar in Brightspace
The Industry Analysis Project is an integral part of this course. Your objective is to apply the
techniques and fundamental principles of Operations Management to an actual local
company. This company can be manufacturing, distribution, service, or a combination of each,
in its operation. Three different frameworks for the project based on each type of company, as
mentioned above, are provided in the following.
Step 1 – Find a firm with a suitable operation.
• Find a host firm that has an operation that will give you an interview and a tour/virtual tour
of their facility. As noted, it can be manufacturing, distribution, service, or a combination of
each, in its operation.
Step 2 – Get Instructor Permission before contacting the firm.

When applying to the instructor for approval, submit to the Project Proposal Folder (on
Brightspace) a document with:
o Your information, including Name and W #;
o Name of the host firm;
o At least one paragraph of the type of operation the firm conducts. Reference to
a website would be helpful also.
Only one person per company. The allocation will be on a first ask basis. Submit your
proposal to the Project Folder on BrightSpace.
*** See Schedule for Deadline for completion of Steps 1 & 2 ***
Step 3 – Prepare to visit (in person or virtually) the host company.
• Be sure to research the company as thoroughly as possible prior to a visit.
• Prepare the interview questions and ensure you get them to your host prior to the meeting,
so that they can be prepared, as well.
• Book a plant visit early so that you have time to reschedule, if there is an unforeseen
cancellation.
▪ Establish a back-up visit time for a contingency.
Step 4 – Do Operations Visit (in person or virtually).
▪ Please ensure that you gather all required information, so that a second visit is not required.
Step 5 – Prepare Final Report.
▪ Submit the Industry Analysis Project to the Project Folder by the due date, as seen in the
Brightspace calendar.
▪ See formatting requirements – below.
