Description

Introduction:
In Chapter 4 of Math and Science for Young Children, you read and learned about More Prekindergarten and Kindergarten Concepts and Skills. Below are a few questions that you will discuss as a group.  Answer the questions in your own post, then reply to two peers whose answers differ from yours.  Provide feedback to their answers (did you agree or not agree, and explain why – offer ideas, suggestions, etc.).  All questions must be answered and discussed in length to receive full credit.

Prompt:
In the PowerPoint for Chapter 4, you will see videos at the bottom of slides 3, 11, and 15.  Each of these videos are specific to shape activities, space activities, or parts & whole activities.
For this discussion board, watch each of the three videos and answer the following questions for EACH VIDEO:
Video 1 (Slide 3): Shape Activities.
Discuss your prior knowledge of this concept.  Did you truly understand how in depth ECE must go when teaching about shapes? Why or why not?
What surprised you the most from this video?  Why?
How did this video help you better understand this concept?
Video 2 (Slide 11): Space Activities.

1. Video 1 (Slide 3): Shape Activities.

Discuss your prior knowledge of this concept. Did you truly understand how in depth ECE must go when teaching about shapes? Why or why not?
My prior knowledge of this concept, children explores and learns a naturalistic way about the shape of each objects. Adults help by giving the child things to view, hold, and feel. Adults helps by giving the child things to view, hold, and feel. Yes, I understood how ECE must go when teaching about shapes. Through the exploitation of shapes and spatial relations the child builds the foundation of geometry.
What surprised you the most from this video? Why?
What surprised me the most from this video was, concepts of shape can be applied to developing perceptual-motor integration, I didn’t realize that Perceptual motor skills have the abilities to help children develop through their senses that allow them to move and interact with their environment.
How did this video help you better understand this concept?
Understanding that the concept of shape can be taught through naturalistic, informal, and adult-guided, intentionally planned experiences.

2. Video 2 (Slide 11): Space Activities.
Discuss your prior knowledge of this concept. Did you truly understand how in depth ECE must go when teaching about shapes? Why or why not?
My prior knowledge of this concept, children need to understand the spatial relationship between their body, other things, and the things around them. When children earn that things are related through position, direction, and distance.. children must be able learn to fit things into the space available and make construction space. Yes, I understand how ECE must go when teaching about space. Children learn through play and play areas help chider build spatial concepts.
What surprised you the most from this video? Why?
What surprised me from this video when it was mentioned children must be able to use space in a logical way. As I read play spaces are children’s environments for learning whether it’s inside or outside, their play spaces are where they explore, experiment, and solve problems.
How did this video help you better understand this concept?
Understanding this concept better by taking in that adult-guided activities such as directed games, activities, and so on help children move their bodies in space .

3. Video 3 (Slide 15): Part & Whole Activities.
Discuss your prior knowledge of this concept. Did you truly understand how in depth ECE must go when teaching about shapes? Why or why not?
My prior knowledge of this concept, children learn that things, people, and animals have parts. Children also learn that whole things can be divided into smaller parts or pieces. Yes, I understand how ECE must go when teaching about standards and part-whole relationships. This interest and the ideas learned are the foundations of learning about fractions.
What surprised you the most from this video? Why?
What surprised me most from this video was, how this experience can teach essential social skills because watching kids they do focus on the number of things they see, I hear kiddos all the time discussing their breakfast, lunch, and snack with their classmates. For an example they’ll say I have this many fruit on my plate and you have so and so. or guess how many chicken nuggets I have now.
How did this video help you better understand this concept?
Understanding children have natural interest in pars and wholes. When children work with whole it helps young children move from proportional level to the concrete perspective
