read a chapter and write about 2 takeaways that interested you in the chapter and then reply to two comments
After reading Chapter 20, the first takeaway I gained was about the extent to which the conservative regimes in Europe after the defeat of Napoleon were intent on rolling back the changes brought about by the French Revolution. They aimed to maintain a balance of power between European nations, which would prevent any one ruler from dominating the continent. This is interesting because it shows how much the conservative rulers feared the potential for another revolution and the destabilization it could bring. The second takeaway I understood was the way in which the revolutions of 1848 marked a turning point for Europe. The failure of these revolutions led to the emergence of new forms of conservative government and a breakdown of revolutionary unity. It also led to a shift in political and cultural thinking, with earlier forms of utopian socialism giving way to Marxism and Romanticism losing its appeal to be replaced by the more biting viewpoint of realism. This is significant because it shows how these revolutions had a lasting impact on European politics and culture.A question that had sparked from the chapter is why did the revolutions of 1848 fail? Despite the widespread popular support for these revolutions, they were ultimately unsuccessful in achieving their goals. What were the factors that contributed to their failure? Was it due to a lack of leadership, a breakdown in revolutionary unity, or the overwhelming military might of the conservative regimes?
During the readings what I found most interesting was the Revolution happening in Latin America where it started with Modern day Argentina claiming its independence from Spain. What I find most interesting is the Characters Simon Bolivar, and Jose de San Martin. Their idea was to create a free army composed of slaves, native Americans, to fight against Spain’s control and create a  “Pan American republic”. Which I do find interesting as it would later inspire Europeans in their own struggles. Another interesting aspect I found in this chapter was that Britain almost had a revolution. A new topic for me as I had not heard about this. Although now reading it I can see why there was almost a revolt. To start the end of the Napoleonic wars caused wages to be lowered, and harvest was not the greatest. Even more fascinating was that while reading this portion of the chapter it seemed like that the middle class was not represented properly in Britain. Which caused civil unrest and would later transpire to the national army harming their citizens which they would later be criticized about. Not a very good look for those in parliament. For my question relates to the plan of the Pan American Republic, can we see remnants of that today?
